The names listed with a number are what the Sumner County Archives believes to be land grants. After comparing this list with the land grants the Archives found many of the names listed were those granted land or those persons listed as assignees. The following was written at the beginning of the list for those particular entries in 1789:

Record of the Tax, laid for the paying of the militia employed in cutting the road and escorting families from the town and of Clinch Mountain to the Cumberland Settlements. Aug. 25^th, 1789.
