The Sumner County Archives was established in December, 1986 under Tennessee Code by the Sumner County Commission. Sumner County was formed in 1786 and most records survive from that date. The Archives is the department of the Sumner County government that is charged with preserving and protecting the records of Sumner County and as such is the official depository and research facility for county records. The Archives operates under Tennessee State law and the direction of the Sumner County Public Records Commission. Almost all early county records are housed at the Archives. In addition to county records, the Archives has an excellent library collection that includes local genealogy and history. "An Overview of Holdings," as listed below, provides a more detailed accounting of the holdings.
While the county funds two full time employee positions, the Archives' operating budget is derived primarily from the sale of copies of documents and the volunteer efforts of many local people. All requests for information are handled by the two staff members who also work with patrons on the scene, do cataloging and have many other duties. Turn around time for a request is usually about two weeks.
Internet access is not available on the computers at SCA. Scanners, cameras and other forms of imaging equipment belonging to researchers are not allowed in the Archives.
The Archives invites you to
use our on-line catalogue which now includes a sizeable manuscript collection, but please be aware of the following limitations to the information that you find.
You must come to the Archives or send a representative to access information from
books that are un-indexed and material listed as MSC from Manuscripts Special Collection.
The Sumner County Archives would like to thank J. Wright for his help with this website.
