Explanation of Vital Records
In 1908 the State of Tennessee enacted a new law for the recording of vital records.
It was the responsibility for each individual county to uphold this law.
Tennessee Code Annotated (T.C.A.) Title 68 Chapter 3 states the law and conditions therein.
This new law was put into effect 01 July 1908 however it was a 4 year term law.
Thus meaning the new T.C.A. for vital records would expire 30 June 1912 and would have to be reinstated.
It is not known why the law was not reinstated at the end of June 1912 but the State did reinstate it on 01 January 1914.
Due to this lapse in the law the individual counties apparently used their own discretion on recording the vital records.
Sumner County stopped maintaining the records on the 30 June 1912 and did not begin to record them again until 01 January 1914.
