New Burrus Elementary School

Sumner's newest school, one grandparent and retired educator said, is the nicest elementary facility he has seen in Tennessee and beyond.

Students, parents and residents saw Dr. William Burrus Elementary School at Drakes Creek in Hendersonville for the first time Monday, Jan. 4, when teachers and staff held an open house.

The 93,000-square-foot, $14 million school at the campus of Knox Doss at Drakes Creek Middle starts Tuesday, Jan. 5, five months later than planned because of weather, increasing costs by about $145,000.

Burrus' 465 students and 33 teachers shared Knox Doss' building for the first half of the 2015-16 year, which, many say, went well and was worth the wait.

Fully funded and equipped with all needed technology, a ready library and two playgrounds, Burrus reflects the system's goal to establish a new standard that eases learning, teaching and parental involvement, Director of Schools Del Phillips said.
